The Story of Generations

I was inspired to compete this month in the Sockdown Challenge by the Sock Knitters Anonymous group on Ravelry. This month’s challenge? Design your own socks.

I’ve never done anything like this before, but felt inspired to take a stab at it. Behold, Generations…by Kelly H.

But I’m a storyteller at heart, not a designer, and so these socks have a story to them. Pull up a chair and listen in.

The Story of Generations

Before we met, my husband and I were travelers. Not in the literal sense of the word, but in the figurative one. We were wanderers before we met one another. That’s us, at the top of the socks near my jeans. Two lone cables. As we grew and changed, we came closer together, until the point when two became one, we met, we married. That big twisty intertwined cable there in the middle? That’s us.

Our story doesn’t end there, though. From the connection that he and I made, we were blessed with two beautiful baby girls, one cable coming off of each side of our cable. As time passed, they too went out in the world as travelers, further from home, spreading their wings. My husband and I got older, represented by the cable getting skinnier.

As we grow older together, I imagine our daughters coming back towards us, returning home.

And then one day, I know it will happen, that our cable, our lives will cease, and the girls will head back out into the world on their own, with just what we’ve taught them.

Generations…continuing on, living, sharing, learning, remembering, embracing. Connected.

I am not sure if the sock is as pretty as I want it to be, to do justice to the story, to our story…to the generations ahead.
