Socks Abroad!

Of course, the trip to Hamburg wouldn’t have been complete without knitting.  I knit by the lake, in numerous outdoor cafes, in our hotel rooms, on the bus, and on the airplane.  I have two pairs of socks in progress now, and both are world travelers (more than I can say for most Americans who never leave the country!).

Socks really are the perfect travel project (thanks for the tip, Yarn Harlot!).  I plan on knitting my socks off (pun intended) while we travel the globe this summer!

Hamburg: An Overview

We had an absolutely amazing 3 day weekend in Hamburg…amazing.  I’ll try not to go on and on, and plan to save information about the knitting on holiday and Erica’s 2nd birthday for other posts, or this one might get a bit overwhelming!

We arrived late Friday night via Jet2.com and Leeds-Bradford International Airport.  I can’t say enough about how quick and easy it was to fly through a smaller airport, on a smaller plane.  No real delays, no real crowds, and both coming and going our bags were there sitting when we made it through security!

Not only were our flights quick and easy, but the weather couldn’t have been more beautiful…really.  Mid to upper 70s all weekend, and sunshine like I haven’t seen yet this year.

Saturday was mostly reserved for walking around and exploring in Hamburg, around the lake, and in the Botanical Gardens.

Sunday was Erica’s secret birthday (because she thought that we were going to Tropical World for her birthday, and as we were without gifts and cakes, we are really going to celebrate on Wednesday).  We went to Hagenbeck Tierpark, a zoo in Hamburg. It was enormous and amazing…we spent almost 4 1/2 hours there.

Monday was a glorious last day–the weather cooperated again, and we spent the morning walking around again, exploring the gardens some more, and making the trek to the bus station.

All in all, we had a wonderful trip!  I highly recommend Hamburg, especially if you can put in an order for some of the beautiful weather we got on our trip!  The girls really did such a great job overall, though their sleep wasn’t as sound as we would have liked.

We are so glad that Grandma was there to share it with us!  In fact, we’re talking about Ireland on her next visit.  Cheers!

And we’re off…

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Hamburg we go!

That’s right!  Mom’s here, the bags are packed, the flights and hotel room are booked, and we’re preparing to head out this afternoon for Germany for a long weekend.

Wahoo!

Our plans include shopping for Gummi Bears and Hummels, going to the zoo, and walking around the lake.  Weather should be in the mid-70s!

Don’t miss me too much…I promise to return with stories to tell and pictures to share.  Plus, at least one finished sock, if I have anything to say about it!

Wish us luck and good travel ju-ju!

The House that Bugs Built

Ok, well, not built, but sure are infesting at the moment.

Kicka has a bit of a sickness bug, and since this is the first time she’s had a fever since she had a febrile seizure in February, I’m a bit paranoid and haven’t left the house (or her side) for the morning.  Marcus assures me there is no reason to worry, but still, what else is a mother to do?

Not only is my house infested with a fever bug that I hope that we don’t all catch, but I have a bit of a bug of a different sort–the travel bug.  From the moment we arrived in Mallorca I found myself contemplating why we haven’t been taking more advantage of Europe at our fingertips.  And so the minute I got home I started searching for cheap flights on Jet2.Com, and guess what I found?  Incredibly inexpensive tickets to Hamburg for a long weekend when my mother is here!  For less than GBP 40 a person (including luggage and taxes), the five of us are flying to Germany!  The tickets are booked, and now I just need to find us somewhere reasonably priced to stay.  But we are going!

I suppose the other bug filling up my house is the ever present knitting bug.  Tomorrow night my Nutty Knitters of Harrogate Ravelry Group is meeting at my friend Samantha’s house.  I am really looking forward to it–these ladies are such an inspiration to me, and thought I might not be able to sew on a button (seriously), I’ll try a twisted rib or a cable without a second thought.  I’ve still got six (yep, six) projects on the needles, but I am hoping to finish up the Easy Ribbed Socks that I took on holiday with me by tomorrow night so that I can show them off.

If your house is filled with bugs too, good luck!
